That is the first big adjustment your family has to make when they see you beginning to enjoy the company of the opposite sex.  They must be assured you are not going to replace mom or dad in their hearts and that this romance will never remove the love you cherish for that departed spouse.  To the children, that love must endure forever because it is the foundation of their concept of family which is a big part of their own identity as well, even though one parent may have passed away.

This is a next step in life that calls for you, the senior citizen and the wise old Grandma or Grandpa  to use some of that sensitivity and wisdom of your years to help your children and even grandchildren accept your new romance and evolve with you to a new phase of life.  If you have the chance as you begin a new relationship, the time to begin the acceptance process is before that friendship becomes a romance.

By joining with your children and discussing that this will happen, even before it happens, you begin the acceptance process.  In their minds and emotional systems, they begin to understand your need for companionship and for love and for romance.  You need that as much as they do.  So you explain it to them.

Then as you begin to see a romantic interest, be open with the family about what you are doing.  Adult children can even get to the point that they will be your advisor and your cheerleaders as you enjoy a new era of dating and romance.  Once that arena of life is open, then when you do “bring home the date to meet the family” it wont be such a difficult thing. 

By keeping the adult children always in the loop, they can talk with one another, agree that this is the best possible thing for you and even work to help the grandkids accept your new romance.  Before long, he or she will be able to come for dinner, join in the holidays and really become part of the family.  Just as you opened your heart when your kids were dating and finding new loves, you will teach your kids to open their hearts to someone who is becoming important to you. 

Helping your family accept your new romantic companion is a cycle of life, but if we handle it lovingly and honestly, it’s a good cycle.

 So long as you feel healthy and can move around under your own steam, there’s nothing wrong with staying on your own. However, there are limitations to what we can do at 70 or 80 as opposed to what we did at 30 and 40 or even 50 years of age. Once we accept these limitations we are ready to move on to evaluating and deciding which chores are best left to others to do.

Each individual’s situation and circumstances are different and there are many factors that need to be considered .

The first thing to do is decide whether you can manage the home you presently live in. Be honest! Is it too big or too expensive to maintain? If so - you always have the option to move to a self contained apartment or smaller independent dwelling that can be modified to help you get around safely.

As we grow older, smaller is better and minimal maintenance means less dependence on other people to do your chores.

Where ever you are living - it will need to be cleaned, vacuumed, dusted and taken care of. Repairs and general maintenance tasks will pop up and it's not a good idea for you to climb a ladder at the age of 70 to clean out the gutters.

There's no stopping if you start to fall!

If you choose independent living or apartment living in a gated community, you can benefit from general maintenance services and a club house to socialize in. You may be able to expand your social circle with new friends sharing your same living experience.

Aging Parents and Role Reversal

Is this the day you thought would never happen? Are your roles in life  reversing? Are you trying to make decisions for yourself and your Aging Parent?  What will be best for them without altering your life too drastically. How do you keep up the pace and ultimately please everyone around you?

You are not alone in life, you have a family, significant other, a career to think about. You want to balance everything to keep everyone happy and life as normal as possible. Think again! Those once a week visits or daily phone calls aren’t enough anymore. Your parent needs care, the real kind.

The care includes making sure they eat, that they take their meds, that their money isn’t being floundered away on TV shopping. You have siblings that think Assisted Living or Nursing Facilities are awful and they don’t want to put Mom or Dad in one even though they also don’t want to help out. How do you cope? How do you deal with this situation without alienating every member of your family?

First, understand it’s not about you. It is not about guilt and what some think is the “Right thing to do”.  It’s not about hanging on to "the someone they used to be". It may be as simple as an Aide visiting once or twice a day to help with showering, dressing, meals and meds. Their health may need more than that and the visiting nurse or doctor’s office is the place to apply the concern.

The best word to learn to help an elder parent is the same as if your infant child were being cared for and that is SAFETY. If safety is not at the level necessary, keep pushing until you get the help you need. Keep insisting on SAFETY.

It may take you time to uncover everything available to your parent to help with this care process but  it will be worth it in the many years elder care can stretch out to be. It's best to discuss with them all their health and medical, financial and personal situations before that day arrives.

When they are older the best thing you can give them is you. Spend quality time instead of Stress time. Have them over for a day and dinner instead of needing to pawn them off on someone else. The resentment builds if you do this alone and there are many really good care facilities to take that burden off your shoulders.

Some Tips on Making Remembering Easier

If you are like the rest of us and getting a little older, even over 40 years of age, you may find that you are starting to forget things a little easier.  Part of this is due to the fact we are all so busy these days, it's hard to remember everything.

Here are some tips to help you remember things a little easier:

If you want to remember to do something in the morning, just put a note on your bathroom mirror.

If you need to remember to take something with you the next day either put it in your car now, if it's not perishable, so you don't even have to try to remember it, or put it in front of the front door
so you will almost trip over it on your way out. If you must leave it in the refrigerator, then put something in the fridge that you definitely won't leave the house without, say your keys, a shoe, a
ring, you get the idea.

If you want to remember to look something up next time your PC is on, put the paper, article, coupon etc on the keyboard or write your note on a post it and put it on the keyboard or mouse.

You don't always have to write yourself a note, you can use items already available to help you remember. For example, let's say you need to remember to pick the next Netflix movie you want from your queue, just use the outside part of the return envelope that you would normally recycle and leave it on your keyboard or laptop. It's larger and red so it stands out more that a post it.

If your spouse forgets to tell you things when you get home, have them write down just a word or two on a post it and put it where you set your keys, purse, wallet etc when you get home. This is also a useful trick for yourself, if you want to remember to do something when you get home from work, just leave a note where you will be sure to see it upon arrival.

You can leave odd items that will spark your memory like leaving an empty cupcake pan in the middle of the table because you are supposed to bake some in the next day or two or maybe on the weekend, but you want to remember to buy the mix sometime this week.

If you are washing and drying work clothes and you want to avoid ironing them as much as  possible, simply set the timer for the approximate time it will take to wash them, promptly put them in the dryer and reset the timer again so you can promptly take them out  before the dryer has stopped.

These days you can set reminders on Outlook, at the office, on your cell phone, your iPhone or just your old fashioned digital watch if that's easier. Keep an era sable board you can write large notes to all on the fridge.

Grandparents Raising Grandchildren - we love them, but...

There is a family phenomenon that you may face now as you should be heading into a leisurely life of a senior citizen and retirement.  But if you find that you are being called upon to raise your own grandchildren, that is a senior citizen lifestyle that is very different than what was expected.

  It might be somewhat comforting to know that the incidences of grandparents being called upon to raise their grandchildren is more common now than ever before.  But the fact that a lot of senior citizens have to raise their grandkids doesn’t make it any easier to face that challenge yourself.

There are a lot of reasons by senior citizens find themselves raising their grandchildren.  The nature of the problem will say a lot about how you approach the many issues of child rearing.  The reasons range from death of the parents to situations of abuse, drug or alcohol difficulties or if your child had the baby out of wedlock.  So the extent to which you can have the birth parent active in the life of the baby will be driven by the severity of the reason you are being asked to become a parent a second time around.

Probably the biggest question you will have to answer is what to tell the child.  Honesty is so important in raising children.  It wont take them long to figure out that his or her “parents” are a lot older than the other children’s parents.  So if you can be honest, while that creates other anxieties in the child, those are much healthier for him or her to confront than dealing with being deceived about parentage issues.

If you have the birth mother living with you as well, that can be good or bad.  As the girl’s parents, you will be doing her a favor if you enable her to serve in her own parental role as much as she possibly can.

The ideal situation would be if the child knew this was his or her mom rather than go down the road of saying she is an older sister.   Then you can serve in the capacity of caregivers and facilitators but still allow that natural mother/child bond to help both grow into those roles.  It may be hard in the short term but as the child grows older, you and your daughter will be glad you made the effort to handle the issue this way.

The availability of other family members will also be a factor in the demands of parenthood.  Children are active little creatures and they love to run and play actively, especially with their parents.

But sometimes senior citizens are not as much the run and play as much as the cuddle and read a story kind of parents.  If the child has uncles or aunts living nearby who can step in and provide that kind of support to the child, that will take some pressure off of you to try to keep up with the kiddos.

As you step into the role of parent of your own grandchild, it’s proper although a bit frightening to look down the road 18 years and wonder, will I make it?  It’s a fair question and one you need to make provision for.

Any parent provides for their child in the event of their death and in the case of seniors raising children, those provisions are even more important.  But the provisions don’t just end with financial support.  If Grandpa and Grandma both pass away before the child is done growing up, there should be a natural and acceptable home for that child to go to that will be comfortable for them and where they can continue to grow and learn with as little interruption as possible.

Short of the death of your children, don’t discount the return of your child to assume the role of parent again.  You don’t want this to be a hostile interruption.  If there was abuse or substance problems, there will be legal oversight and a case worker will have to be involved to determine if your son or daughter is capable of being a parent.

But if they can accept that responsibility and they are prepared to both love and care for the child, then you can hand that responsibility over and feel fulfilled that you did your part to assure your precious grandchild was properly cared for when he or she needed you the  most.
