For most seniors, continuing to live an independent life in their own home amidst their own things is very important.
Growing old does not mean that we have to stop living. On the contrary, it means that you continue
to live life to the fullest in spite of your body slowing down, feeling tired faster and some achy joints, all of which are just part of life.
There is another important aspect of growing older, and that is the dependency factor.
We need to take a close look at how to modify our home to retain our independence and yet live in
relative safety. Simple modifications can often make a world of difference and also help seniors live quality lives.
The first bit of good news is you don’t need to spend a fortune on modifying your home. For many
seniors, monetary constraints scare them into thinking that they will not be able to afford
modifications.
Kitchens and bathrooms are often considered major safety hazards in the home and this becomes
more relevant in the case of seniors. Here is a list of some of the areas you may want to pay close
attention to when making your modifications.
* Can you get in and out of the bathtub easily and do you have grab-bars in all the strategic areas
like the tub, shower stall and toilet?
* Can you access things in your kitchen easily or are there things out of reach which require you to
climb a ladder?
* Can you handle doorknobs and faucets easily?
* Can you sit down while working in your kitchen when you need to?
* Is the wiring for all your appliances properly done and safety protected?
* What sort of floor do you have and how slippery is it when wet?
These are some of the more basic questions that come to mind. Use them as a base to build on
when making your modifications.
One very important, and valuable point is that you need to put things within easy reach. This
minimizes or removes the need for you to climb or stretch to get something. Avoid climbing as far as possible - totally would be even better.
